Practice made perfect

NMC to publish banned nurses list online

THE names of all nurses and midwives who have been struck off in the past five years are to be published online next month. The Nursing and Midwifery Council will add to their website the professional details off those since January 2008 who have been banned from the role.

Until now, checks on an employee’s history had to be made in writing with the regulator. But the growing number of nurses employed by the general public – often in the home – has led the NMC to make the details more accessible.

Their decision goes beyond the recommendation of the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence, which had proposed that the details remain in the NMC register for five years. Instead, they will remain online indefinitely.
