New CCTV Cameras Installed in Glasgow

A number of new cameras have been installed in the Govanhill area of Glasgow in an attempt to reduce the number of crimes being carried out in the area.

Originally planned for installation in late 2015, the CCTV cameras are now operational in the south-west part of the city. There had been calls to install the camera to prevent a number of crimes in the area and act as a suitable deterrent.

The campaign for new cameras in the south side of the city came following a number of sexual assaults in late 2014.

A 26-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in Dixon Avenue in February 2014 and a 24-year-old woman was raped in Dixon Road two months later.

Installation of CCTV to Detect Criminals

Southside Central Councillor Soryia Siddique, who had campaigned for the installation of CCTV cameras welcomed the installation and stated that the cameras would act as a deterrent to crime in the area. She said that “residents, specifically females” had raised “ongoing concerns” over the number of crimes in the area.

She added: “I was delighted when Glasgow City Council confirmed CCTV cameras installation in Govanhill, aimed at combating crime and fear of crime.

“Residents have been contacting me regarding the delay which I have raised. I was advised that that BT Openreach have completed the required works that were outlined in previous correspondence.”

Allison Street at Victoria Road, Garturk Street at Allison Street, Westmoreland Street at Calder Street, Langside Road at Calder Street, Allison Street at Langside Road, Annette Street at Calder Street and Dixon Avenue at Westmoreland Street are all now covered by CCTV.

The cameras, which were installed by Community Safety Glasgow (CSG) will be monitored 24 hours a day from the operations base in the East End of the city.

CSG chair Bailie Fariha Thomas said: “I am very pleased that we have been able to extend our CCTV infrastructure to include Govanhill.

“There has been a great desire from within the local community to have CCTV installed in Govanhill to assist with efforts to improve the area.

“CCTV has made a very significant contribution to tackling crime and other forms of anti-social behaviour in Glasgow and we are confident Govanhill will benefit as other areas have done.

“We can now monitor the streets of Govanhill on a constant basis and with a significant enforcement operation also ongoing, we hope to provide the kind of reassurance the local community has been looking for.”
