Homicide statistics

Alcohol-fuelled violence is costing lives, Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill has said as statistics showed 97 people were victims of murder last year, with the vast majority of those accused under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Key statistics from the Homicide in Scotland 2010-11 include:

– There were 97 murder victims in Scotland in 2010-11.
– Most people accused of murder were under the influence of alcohol or drugs (79% of known cases), with over half under the influence of alcohol (53% of known cases).
– In the vast majority of cases where the relationship was known (88%), homicide is carried out by a person known to the victim, not a stranger.
– Most murder victims are male (79%).
– Most murders (69%) take place in a residential location, not in a public place.
– The statistics reflect a general downward decline in the homicide rate, down by 30% from a high of 134 in 2004/05.
