Glasgow bids to host UEFA Euro 2020 matches

Glasgow has recently launched a bid to play its part in the UEFA European Championships in 2020, reports the Scotsman.

The bid was submitted by the Scottish FA and, if successful, will mean that Glasgow will be one of the host cities for the tournament, with matches to be played at Scotland’s national stadium, Hampden Park.

The competition is normally hosted by just one country, but because 2020 will be the 60th anniversary of the tournament the organisers plan to break with tradition and mark the occasion by having the matches played in 13 different cities across Europe.

Commenting on the bid, Shona Robison, Cabinet Secretary for Commonwealth Games, Sport, Equalities and Pensioners Rights, said:

“Scotland is a natural home for the world’s greatest sporting events.  We are a nation of sport fans, ready to welcome the best football talent from across Europe and take part in what will be a remarkable year for the European Championships.

“This isn’t a bid just for Glasgow but a bid for the whole of Scotland. Hosting part of UEFA Euro 2020 provides a perfect opportunity to continue our national legacy from both Glasgow 2014 and a platform to showcase our culture and country to an international audience.”

Glasgow will now have to wait until September to find out if the bid has been successful.
