Media Law
Overview
SCOTLAND loves its news. We read more newspapers per head of population than almost anywhere in the world, and we are switching on to a growing number of television, radio and internet outlets based in this country.
In comparison to many other countries, our media also have freedom from any legal restrictions on the way they ask questions, gather material and publish stories. Even where information is published which is proved to be false, it is rare for court action to follow.
But the rules are changing. In a number of recent cases, individuals have won the right to prevent the publication of information about their private lives, and companies are becoming increasingly aware of the steps they can take to protect their assets, either under the media’s regulatory codes or through the law of intellectual property.
We have expertise across the spectrum of media law, including defamation, contempt of court, information technology, media regulation and intellectual property. We can offer advice to publishers, companies or private individuals, from the point when first inquiries are made, right up to and after publication.
